Quick Action Grant Round 2 Recipients

In partnership with the United Way Greater Toronto, and with support from York Region, the Georgina Community Action Table (Georgina CAT) is pleased to announce the recipients of Round 2 Quick Action Grants. The purpose of the Quick Action Grants is to provide residents and agencies with resources to implement their ideas to address two critical issues in our community – Mental Well-Being and Employment/Income Generation. Congratulations to our grant recipients!


The Butterflyway Project ($1,000): The resident led Butterflyway project is coming this June – August. This series of events will focus on the importance of planting pollinator gardens with native plants! On Opening day, a canoe planter will be set up at The Link community garden in Sutton that will be a lasting planter for years to come. Participants will have the opportunity to assist in planting and setting up garden beds for the community to enjoy. For more information, please contact anthony@routescc.org.


Moving into Wellness ($1,000): If you enjoy dancing, meditation, and mindful movement, these events are right for you! The resident led Moving into Wellness workshops will deliver techniques to support and enhance your mental well being. Over a series of 3 workshops, participants will have the opportunity to practice mindful meditation and learn NIA which is a combination of music, mindfulness, and dynamic movement. NIA combines fifty-two simple movements from dance arts, martial arts, and the healing arts to leave participants feeling energized, mentally clear, and emotionally balanced. These events will include a series of three workshops delivered in each of the Georgina communities from June – August. Pefferlaw Bike Parade ($1,000): This resident led exciting and creative event will give families and children a sense of teamwork and community fun! During this event participants will have the opportunity to decorate and style-up their motorless bicycles, scooters, wagons, etc. Teams are welcomed and will be divided into age groups to compete for prizes! Snacks and food items will be for sale and money received will be donated to our community. For more information, please contact anthony@routescc.org.


Dirty Birdz Car Show ($1,000): Get ready to rev your engines for the Dirty Birdz Car Show coming September 17th 2022, the Dirty Birdz will be hosting their annual car show at Hidden Stone Farm! This resident led free event will be a day to relax with your friends and family and look at some amazing classical cars. Local car owners are encouraged to participate and share their cars, stories, and journey. Vendors will be selling food items and activities will be available for all to join. This event will be accepting donations that will be given to our local food banks to support their services to our community. For more information, please contact anthony@routescc.org.


Community Movements ($1,000): Community Movements is a resident led event focused on providing families and residence of Georgina the education on how to plant a garden and live a healthier natural lifestyle. During this event participants will have the opportunity to learn how to plant their own food while staying active outdoors with activities, crafts, and games for all to enjoy. Speakers will be present during the events to educate participants on gardening tips and occupational opportunities within the agricultural sector. This event will be held every Thursday starting June and ending August. There will be a harvest BBQ at the end of the event where participants can connect, engage, and enjoy their fruits of labour. Art Connect($1,000): A twist on the traditional art classes, this resident led event gives participants the opportunity to make food art! Participants will be allowed to select from colourful fruits and veggies to create edible art. The event will be led by an art historian who will present a slide show featuring exquisite paintings of flowers throughout the ages for inspiration. After the talk we will handouts simple images of sample food flowers to help inspire us to create our own edible art. Lunch will be provided as well as door prizes. KCC Community Garden($500): The Keswick Christian Church is increasing the size of their community garden for more participants to join! KCC provides a garden that focuses on helping individuals and families plant fruits and vegetables in an accessible area for everyone to enjoy. Gardening provides exercise, relaxation, and a sense of community belonginess. There will be presenters hosting workshops to educate participants on gardening tips and occupational opportunities within the agricultural sector. At the end of the event, there will be a harvest BBQ celebration where participants can connect, engage, and enjoy their fruits of labour. This series of gardening events will take place between June – August at 2 Old Homestead Rd in Keswick. For more information, please contact anthony@routescc.org.


Entrepreneurial Seminar Series($10,000): Led by the Georgina Trades Training Inc. (GTTI) in partnership with the Georgina Chambers of Commerce, GTTI will provide a series of seminars for individuals interested in becoming an entrepreneur. This is a new initiative that will consist of 6-8 speakers, each presenting one workshop on topics of interest. Topics will include entrepreneurship, challenges, creating a business plan, applications for funding, and employment law. Local business and organizations will be in attendance to share their own personal experiences and journey as an entrepreneur. This project focuses on fostering new business opportunities as well as personal and professional development for new and existing entrepreneurs. One Month Towards Community Mental Wellness Through Arts & Culture ($10,000): Envisioned by the Georgina Centre for Arts and Culture and in partnership with Clearwater Farms, and various community businesses, service providers and community-based facilitators, we are organizing a month-long series of diverse events for all community members to take part. This project will take place during the month of November 2022. The nature of the festival is continuous and varied programming that uses various activities, perspectives, and cultural nuance to focus on the importance of mental health wellness. This month of activities will include lunch and learn, reiki and energy healing workshops, aromatherapy workshops, mandala workshops, drumming circles, yoga and art classes, music, scavenger hunts for youth, creating comfort boxes and much more. The Georgina CAT is a community based round table comprised of residents and agencies that want to make a difference in Georgina. Our primary focus is in the areas of Mental Well-being and Employment/Income Generation. We will be implementing one more round of Quick Action Grants.
